Reginald VelJohnson – What Has He Been Up To?

Reginald VelJohnson

There are thousands of actors making a living in Hollywood. Some of these actors have caved a niche for themselves. We hear how actors claim to hate to be put in a pigeon hole but when you think of drug dealing characters some actors come to mind, when you think of law enforcement, the military, glamour, hustle, there are actors who spring to mind. With Reginald VelJohnson, his name appear on your mind’s board when you think of police work. Here are all the things you need to know about Carl Winslow.

How old is Reginald VelJohnson?

Reginald VelJohnson was born Reginald Vel Johnson in August 1952 in Queens, New York City. He was named after his father a hospital attendant. His mother was a nurse. When he was 13, his father did what you might have read many times in ghetto novels of the mid-twentieth century, he left the family. Unable to raise Reginald and his brother Barry alone, their mother remarried.

VelJohnson attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. Named after a US Supreme Court judge, the school has educated a number of public figures; in fact, while in the school, Reginald was classmates with a former Director of CIA George Tenet and Ron Jeremy the pornographic actor, filmmaker, actor, and stand-up comedian.

Johnson also studied at New York University where he obtained a master’s degree in fine art. Reginald VelJohnson is 67 years old.

Reginald VelJohnson – movies

Reginald VelJohnson started his career as a morgue attendant in the film “Wolfen” in 1981. then he became a corrections officer in “Ghostbusters” then an ambulance driver. This was in 1985 when he was still a small player, when his name was still spelled Vel Johnson. But from 1988 to the rest of the decade, he cut out a niche and held it down, he became a mostly detective-characters actor. These early days were not just films, there were also TV shows. For instance, between 1985 and 1988, he played three episodes in the crime drama “The Equalizer” on CBS.

Here are all James Allen facts

In 1989, VelJohnson acted one episode of the “Perfect Strangers” then he began reprising this role in the legendary “Family Matters” on ABC (and CBS for the last season in 1998). In this show, his full name is Carlton Otis Winslow and the initial was “COW”. The character is a police officer with the Chicago Police Department, an efficient detective under a clueless boss and the patriarch of the Winslow family and father of Judith Winslow, and the lead character. VelJohnson was in this show for 215 episodes.

Winslow is VelJohnson’s biggest endeavor on screen and for a long time, it seemed this would be his only big show. He went on to have a series of one-episodic appearances and average roles on TV films. It seemed like he bossed the Winslow character so well that casting directors were afraid of having another Winslow on their show. It took him nearly a dozen years after for him to get to a recurring level in any TV show. This was in “Hart of Dixie” the comedy-drama on The CW. This was between 2011 and 2015. In 2012, he was part of the animated series and “Tron: Uprising” in Disney XD. And from April 2019, he began to play God in “Lazur Wulf” on Cartoon Network.

Reginald VelJohnson’s film collection is mostly dominated by his appearances as Sgt. Al Powell in “Die Hard” (1988), “Die Hard 2” (1990), and “Die Hard: Vendetta” the video game (2002). In 2019, Reginald played the role of a police officer in “Avenger: Endgame”. His scene was later deleted. They don’t rate him – the sum of the film leg of his career.

Did Reginald VelJohnson die?

The actor is alive. In February 2017, just after Valentine, someone might have awoken with the hungover of booze, shisha, and stale rump still heavy on them and began a rumor which they posted on their site with headline and news stuffed on their domain name that VelJohnson was dead. They said he died of a heart attack.

So one of his fans reached out to VelJohnson on Twitter and said: “@rveljohnson there is a horrible story going around that says you have passed away. Could you please debunk this? Thank you.” And he debunked it with the funniest line possible, “Twitter literally trying to kill me!”

“Vel Johnson was flying from London to Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 12,” the rumormongers had written, “when he went into cardiac arrest. According to the story, paramedics removed him from the flight and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a heart attack.”

Give it to them. They got imagination.

Married or gay?

He was rumored to be in a relationship with James Avery the actor, voice artist, and poet. In 1988, James put a firm period to his aspect of the rumor, he got married. James got married to Barbara and remained wedded with her until his demise in 2013 aged 68. Even after his death, the Vel aspect of the rumor remained because VelJohnson never married. And marriage is a little on the lintel level; he never was associated with any girl romantically.

Married or gay is a phrase from the depth of fan theories and gossipy armchair laziness of blogs. One can be gay and married to the opposite gender. One can be single for life and heterosexual; these two are not mutually exclusive. For VelJohnson, there is one theory many have failed to consider. When he was 13, his father abandoned him and his brother and their mother. No one can measure the psychological effect this had on him. This may be the reason he may have detested marriage and never partook in it.

So we declare his sexual status unknown.

What is Reginald VelJohnson’s net worth

Reginald VelJohnson has been involved in 111 acting credits, says IMDb, in a career that is heading to the 40-year mark and covers TV, films, and voice arts. He has been relatively compensated for this. Considering he has never married nor paid alimony, child support, and college fees (that we know of) so, perhaps, five million dollars is a poor return.

Reginald VelJohnson is  5 feet 8 inches (or 1.73 meters) tall.
