As a result of his father’s USDA assignments, David’s family was frequently forced to relocate throughout the United States.

David Lynch’s Career Line

  • After returning to the United States, David settled in the city of Philadelphia. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where his Europe tour partner Jack Fisk was already a student. While studying at the Institute, he began making short animated films. His first animated short film, ‘Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times)’ (1966), was part of a semester-long student project and was shot while he was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
  • The majority of the paintings for the animation film were completed by himself. Before producing his first feature film, he made another film called ‘The Alphabet’ (1967), which was a combination of animation and live action, and directed a completely live action short film called ‘The Grandmother’ (1970). ‘Eraserhead,’ David’s first full-length feature film, premiered in 1977.
  • The film was notable for its disturbing and dark subject matter, as well as its surrealist tone. The grotesque and nightmarish film quickly became a cult classic among critics.
